The Far Field : Book Review

AUTHOR: Madhuri Vijay
GENRE: Fiction
DURATION: 14 hrs
NARRATOR: Sneha Mathan
SOURCE: Audible
Other formats also available.

This is the story of a 24 year old girl Shalini living in Bangalore with her parents. The story has been narrated by Shalini herself. The story begins from present where Shalini goes through an emotional trauma after her mother’s death.

This also takes her down the memory lane to her childhood where she recalls her parents weird bonding and her own bonding with her parents.
She recalls a Kashmiri vendor called Bashir Ahmed visiting them to sell clothes. Bashir usually visited them on monthly basis.

As the story of the past unfolds,Shalini’s family begins to develop a warm bond with Bashir. Then once Bashir visited them after a long time. When asked by Shalini’s father, Bashir shared that situations back in Kashmir are not fine due to terrorism. Also, he had to vacate his accomodation in Bangalore so now he doesn’t have a place to stay.

Hearing this, Shalini’s father offers Bashir to stay at their home as long as he feels. However things turn sour when during a party hosted by Shalini’s father to introduce Bashir to his friend circle, just a day before he was leaving, some ideological differences arise after which Bashir leaves early the next morning. After this,Bashir goes missing and never turns up to their doorstep.

Back to present, the memories of that warm bond encourage Shalini to visit Kashmir in search of Bashir after her mother’s death.Lot of twists and turns lead to revelation of certain bitter realities to Shalini.

The book is the winner of the prestigious JCB Award for Literature,2019. The first half of the book has beautifully portrayed emotional distress of a young girl in search of parental affection. The book being JCB award winner had built my expectations very high, but it was actually quite a disappointment. The first few chapters draw a different picture about the plot but chapters further are very misleading and the climax is completely different from where it began…far from expectations.

An emotionally confused girl who is searching for a stability finally lands up doingΒ  random things and getting indulged with random people…seems too messed up.The only good thing was the narrator’s efforts. However even this couldn’t help much as the book is spread over 40 chapters and at times the plot seems to fall flat thus leaving less scope even for the narrator.

Moreover,I couldn’t connect with the characters at all and this made it difficult for me to finish the book at times.

I would recommend the book to those who are eager to read every award winning book.

Paradise Girl: Book Review

by #phillfeatherstone
Published by Opitus Books in 2019
Price Rs 352 #ebook(@amazonkindle)

πŸ’™A mystery involving a young girl Cherryl…she spells it Kerryl. The story plot involves people suffering from aΒ  scary, fatal, mysterious infection affecting body cells, specially brain.

πŸ’™Her family called her a paradise girl for some weird reasons which I won’t disclose here, keeping this review a non spoiler one.

πŸ’™Eventually Cherryl gets infected too and is leading a lonely life, her twin brother being arrested for illegally travelling.

πŸ’™Cherryl has been receiving text messages from an unknown person who apparently knows everything about her whereabouts and Cherryl begins to look forward meeting this stranger.

πŸ’™Towards the end of the plot, Cherryl, dressed almost like a bride is found dead in a pool, leaving behind two diaries, green and purple colored…which she used for journalling.

πŸ’™During the investigations, lot of mysteries unfold leaving everyone in investigation team shocked and perplexed.

❓Who was that stranger sending text messages to Cherryl?
❓What was the mystery behind Cherryl’s sudden death?
❓What did the investigation team come to know?

πŸ’ŽIt took me a while to understand where the storyline was leading to.
πŸ’ŽI felt the narration and plot losing their momentum many times.
πŸ’ŽMy curiosity and interest picked up in last few chapters of the book.
πŸ’ŽOverall,I found the bookΒ  average.
πŸ’ŽMystery fans might get a bit disappointed.

The Rule Breakers: Book Review

βœ’@preeti.shenoy, #fiction published by @westland_books in 2018
Price: Rs 221Paperback (@amazondotin )
323 pages

πŸ’™Veda is the eldest of 5 siblings, staying with her parents in Joshimath. She is a college student, brilliant in academics and has career ambitions.

πŸ’™But her parents being conventional, have different plans for her future. As a result,Veda has to get married at an early age of 20,to Bhuwan,a 28 yr old professional working in an MNC in Pune.

πŸ’™This leads to Veda compromising with her dreams and desires, even her soft corner for Suraj, her college friend too.

πŸ’™After marriage,Veda’s life and career ambitions go topsy turvy and full of struggle. Not just her academics but even her married life becomes roller coaster ride with shocking revelations.

πŸ’™With determination,Veda faces it all, finding her aim of life and standing for herself.

πŸ”†The plot till Veda’s marriage doesn’t have anything new,TBH.

πŸ”†Veda’s struggle after her marriage, trying to keep her typical mom in law happy is a bit sympathizing but again doesn’t have anything new, infact I found it very common and predictable.

πŸ”†The only part I found alright is where Veda gears up to do something with life and finds her aim.

πŸ”†Overall,I found this book average, though I had higher expectations.

Life’s Amazing Secrets:BOOK REVIEW #20

#lifesamazingsecrets published by @penguinindia
Price: Rs 150, #paperback (@amazondotin )

“Life is simple,we insist on making it complicated.”

Being a self help book,it doesn’t need a blurb or narrative so skipping that,I would be focussing on the takeaways from the book and my reading experience.

πŸ’ŽBook emphasizes on finding balance and purpose in life.
πŸ’ŽBalance of one’s life works on 4 wheels namely PERSONAL LIFE,RELATIONSHIPS,WORK LIFE & SOCIAL CONTRIBUTION and an alignment between them.

πŸ’ŽIt’s about adjusting priorities depending on the situational needs and focussing on the wheel which is misaligned at that moment.

✳ Deep meaning fundamentals of life have been explained in so simple and easy to grasp manner, the book gave me the feel of reading a manual to leading an amazing life and this is no exaggeration…and this I liked the most about it.

✳The philosophies to a balanced life have been shared in such a manner that I hardly felt I was reading a self help book.

✳The content of book is supported by a number of short stories, rather happenings in people’s life, making it quite relatable.

✳Free from promoting ideologies of any particular religion, the book is able to serve its purpose beyond expectations…making it a book meant for everyone!

✳The book is definitely in the “re-re…read books” category which I never get tired or bored of reading and everytime I reread,I explore something more, something new….and what could be a better day to finish reading such an enlightening book than TEACHER’S DAY!!!

The Magic Strings of Frankie Presto: BOOK REVIEW #19

Author: Mitch Albom
489 Pages, Fiction,Published by Harper Collins in 2015, Price Rs 262 (Amazon India)

πŸ’›Frankie Presto, the protagonist, born under mysterious circumstances and with unusual childhood,is a musician,a guitarist and has gone through too many struggles in different realms of life.

πŸ’›Old Frankie dies mysteriously while performing in a concert, which turns out to be his last performance. He was accompanied by his daughter.

πŸ’›The book narrates life journey of Frankie Presto.

πŸ’ŽThe book beautifully narrates life of Frankie from POV of different people who had been associated with him at some point of time and are now there to attend his funeral, recalling their memories with Frankie.

πŸ’ŽThe zeal and passion of a musician towards his music has been narrated in a very crisp yet touching manner,I liked this part the most.

πŸ’ŽThe storyline alternates between past and present.

πŸ’ŽInitially I found the character of Frankie very complicated and weird, but as I read further, the entire story narration justifies Frankie.

πŸ’ŽIt gives the feel of reading a classic fiction.

My First “Game of Thrones” Book

What could be better than getting a book delivered in the morning… the best beginning of a day for a bookworm!!!

I got my first GOT book delivered today morning…and I have neither watched the show nor had read the books of this series.

I know I know, another late from my side and again,I’m clueless why I couldn’t read the series earlier.

Will share my reading experiences once I’m done reading it…though it’ll have to wait till I finish reading the current book. Can’t hold my excitement to read this book ASAP.

BTW,non spoiler reviews are most welcome.

1)Any of you who has read all the books of the series? Is reading all of them worth?
2) Those who’ve read all the books of the series as well as watched all seasons of GOT,which one did you find better? The books or the show?
